On Thursday, Oct. 15th 2015, the ACAvengers hosted the second annual Affordable Care Act 101 Workshop. We were lucky to have the fantastic Kari Geiger and Emma Lieuwen from our partner WithinReach to serve as our speakers. They provided a hands-on overview of key elements of the ACA, including eligibility requirements, 10 essential benefits, and an overview of the screening and referral process. Participants also had the chance to work in groups on practice case studies, and asked many engaging questions.
The event was very well attended by over 70 students from UW Pharmacy, Nursing, Social Work, MEDEX, Medicine, Public Health, and other health professions schools, as well as many undergraduates. Best of all, of the 10 participants who filled out the feedback form, every single one rated their post-event level of understanding of the ACA as "Functional - Know enough to answer simple questions about eligibility and enrollment" even though most had started the evening with little to no knowledge!
Participant Feedback:
"I really enjoyed case studies where I got to interact with other participants."
"I am fairly ignorant about ACA so everything presented in this event was interesting and surprising. This event is great for raising awareness about an issue in healthcare that is generally not emphasized in health professional programs."
"It was a great event, very well organized and, with food provided, who can say no?"
"I was very thankful for the education and definition of terms."
